Over the past three months the AOPA Australia has received several telephone calls and emails from members expressing concern with respect to our Junior Pilots program and the Cessna 150/152 refurbishment initiative. At the centre of these concerns is a great deal of misinformation regarding the acquisition and restoration costs, which were incorrectly reported by the Recreational Aviation Australia Limited in Sportpilot to have been borne by the AOPA Australia membership. This is entirely incorrect.
To be clear, the aircraft and refurbishment initiative whilst it is an AOPA Australia program, is not being funded by member funds. Rather, the aircraft have been acquired by a sponsor who is also undertaking the refurbishments, with the use of the aircraft donated to AOPA Australia under agreement at not charge.
Our members are invited to follow the restoration progress of these aircraft online at: https://aopa.com.au/junior-pilots-program/
AOPA Australia is excited to be the beneficiary of this initiative and looks forward to seeing the first aircraft completed soon, along with providing first flight experiences at events across Australia, helping kick-start youth in aviation whilst implanting both a positive and welcoming AOPA Australia brand experience on the participants.
